![]() I just feel like it's wrong to not say anything now. But obviously, this is not just about 'free the nipple.' It goes beyond that into all of the current events of the past year. And I just thought it was funny that someone would still respond to something like that, in that way. You could see everything since it was sheer, and this girl responded saying, 'Oh my God.' I thought, Oh my God, doesn't she look good? But she thought it was indecent. It makes me think of how Instagram just removed its ban on women's nipples.ĭo you know what's funny, I once posted a story of a friend wearing a mesh top at a party. I wanted to start this conversation about, 'Okay, what really are those standards? What is expected of women in those environments?' And I wanted to examine that, especially when it comes to what we are expected to wear.ĭefinitely, I feel like fashion is one of the biggest embodiments of that idea of the private versus public - especially when we think of the notion of censorship. I would say the overarching theme for it that we really look at is public versus private and what that dialogue means because I think women are held to different standards in both spaces. So I think it's taking what's part of our brand DNA and now looking at it in a context that's relevant to what's going on today. It's really looking at this contrast between public versus private spaces and how women move within public and private spheres. This collection speaks to topical events that have been going on lately and in the past year. In what ways does the AW23 collection portray these signature themes of yours, but in new and unprecedented ways? Your collections always celebrate fierce femininity and unbridled confidence in the self. Office caught up with designer Kim Shui before the opulent runway show on February 12, to talk collection inspiration, empowerment, and demanding freedom through clothing and beyond. Photos: BTS by Matt Weinberger and Leilani Mitchell Runway by Angel Diaz.To Shui, that distinction doesn’t - and shouldn’t - really exist. Ultra mini-skirts command bodily autonomy while calculated details, such as intricate netting, structured boning, and interwoven laces blur the line between the clothing we wear when we are presenting our public versus our private selves. However, in response to the past year and the current climate of the world in which many women have been told who to be, what to wear, and when to wear it, this collection takes that fortitude one step further. ![]() For Shui, celebrating the bodies of women comes second nature, as her looks commonly drape the body in a goddess-like manner and provide the wearer with uninhibited confidence. Kim Shui’s Autumn/Winter 2023 runway show began with models cascading down a marble staircase before strutting atop an elevated runway strewn with official documents, in looks that displayed every facet of sexiness. The third annual event will feature a new assortment of patterns, pieces, and looks that will be be available for purchase in the Amazon Fashion Store and at Savage X Fenty. These are the messages evoked in the show, even while featuring the entertainment industry’s elite. Love and honor everyone and their differences. To be honest, I could even walk in that show!īe fierce. Each person gets to watch the show and think to themselves, I could wear that. The brand continues to challenge societal standards of beauty, of what a “fashion show” looks like, of what models look like. Every individual can wear and feel good in Savage X Fenty. Inclusive wouldn’t be the right word because with Savage, there is no body thought necessary to “add in” as an afterthought. The mission behind Savage X Fenty is far beyond inclusivity because the brand is focused on being wearable for EVERY body, and making every body feel sexy. Viewers get to witness surprise celebrity guests of all kinds, whether they’re walking the runway, making art through the movement of their bodies, performing their music, or all three. Rihanna combines movement, performance, fashion, and architecture each year when the highly anticipated show rolls around.
